By the end of April 2022, Geely Auto’s cumulative global sales exceeded 16 million. Geely Auto has won the sales champion of Chinese auto brands consecutively in five years.

Geely is founded by Eric Li (Li Shufu) in Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, China as a refrigerator parts manufacturer.
1997
Geely Enters the Automotive Industry
Geely Auto enters the automobile industry with the vision of producing cars that ordinary people can afford, becoming China’s first privately-owned auto manufacturer.

First Geely Auto Vehicle Comes Offline
The first Geely Auto car (Haoqing) rolls off the assembly line in Linhai, Zhejiang Province, China.
2001
Geely Receives the License From Chinese Authorities and Becomes the First Private Car Maker in China
Geely Auto becomes the first privately-owned auto manufacturer officially listed on China’s automobile manufacturer index.

Geely Auto Joins the Ranks of China’s Top Ten Automakers
Geely Auto’s increasing popularity and sales allows it to join the ranks of China’s top ten automakers.

Geely Auto Listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange
Geely Auto becomes the first Chinese automaker to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HK: 0175)
2010
Geely Holding Acquires Volvo Car Corporation
Geely Holding Group acquires 100% of the shares of Volvo Car Corporation from the Ford Motor Company. The agreement is signed on 28 March 2010 and the transaction is completed on 2 August 2010.

Geely Holding Group Enters into the Fortune 500 List
Geely Holding Group is listed as a Fortune 500 company for the first time.

Geely Holding establishes China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT).

Geely Auto officially showcases their flagship BoRui sedan, announces its new brand positioning and officially ties up with the Chinese Olympic Swimming Team. The new brand mission is “Making Refined Cars for Everyone”.

Geely Forms Strategic Partnership with Proton and Acquires Lotus
Geely signs an agreement to acquire a 49.9% stake in Malaysian automaker PROTON and acquires a 51% controlling stake in luxury sports car brand Lotus from DRB-HICOM Berhad of Malaysia.

Geely enters into an agreement with Terrafugia Inc, a US-based company focused on the innovation, engineering and production of flying cars and technologies, to acquire its operations and assets in their entirely.
